Ruth is a flute player based in Essex. As well as being a performer in classical music and all sorts of styles, she also teaches and runs the ‘Art of Music’ workshops. Despite being profoundly deaf from birth, she was the first deaf person to graduate with a music degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2005. She has studied with some of the country’s most respected flautists including Roger Armstrong, Ann Cherry, Karen Jones, Wissam Boustany and James Kortum at the University of Newcastle in Australia.
Ruth gained flute music performance and instrumental teaching diplomas from the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). She was given the opportunity to perform with the world’s best orchestra as a soloist playing the Danzi concerto with the Royal Philharmonic, St Petersburg and the Russian National Orchestra (Moscow) with the Music of Life foundation, with Evelyn Glennie as a guest soloist. Her musical journey from Russia to London was filmed by BBC See Hear as well as another programme about Evelyn Glennie in autumn 2007.
Ruth has written articles on music and deafness which have appeared in various publications such as the Music Teacher Magazine, One in Seven and Scope's DN . She recently supported the National Deaf Children’s Society’s Change your World initiative to canvass views of over 2,000 deaf 9-18 year olds
Ruth currently plays with the Caprice Wind Orchestra and works in various schools as a flute and recorder teacher for Essex Music Services and at the Mary Hare School for the Deaf alongside running her Art of Music workshops. She is a trustee of the Music of Life Foundation which creates opportunities for musicians with disabilities to perform professionally. She regularly plays her flute with her father, Roger Montgomery, together they have set up a duo called ‘Flute Magic’ to provide music for weddings, garden parties, corporate events or recital items.
